Grace's Tips on Teething
Your child is teething and uncomfortable, try giving him/her a frozen bagel. Sometimes even a frozen waffle helps. A cold wet washcloth or even a large piece of velcro (sometimes on the back of a bib) can help alleviate discomfort. Watch them as carefully as ever with these objects.
Teething is not only painful but sometimes causes cold symptoms. My thought is that sometimes the additional teething saliva generated causes coughing giving the impression he/she is sick. Infant Tylenol not only will help with the teething pain but also if your child is truly sick. If this continues, call your pediatrician.
Sometimes all the saliva from the teething can cause loose bowels. I don't think there is any medical evidence to support this, however, check with your pediatrician if the diarrhea continues. You may be told your child has a virus. Heed to every time your child is cutting a tooth, chances are it's related to the teething. You still need to treat the diarrhea but at least you know your child isn't getting sick due to germs or bacteria.
Occasionally a fever develops and the doctor may say your child's ears, lungs etc. are fine. They may say "they probably have a virus". Believe it or not, teething sometimes causes fever although not many pediatricians will agree.
